Appearing in Issue 28 Cacique magazine, the Spirit of InterCaribbean Airlines
For over 300 years, coffee plantations have thrived on the island of Puerto Rico, with exports of the golden elixir making their way around the world. Rumour has it Puerto Rican coffee was even enjoyed by the King of Spain and the Pope. Kirsten Harrington takes us inside the island’s coffee culture.
“Puerto Ricans see coffee as identity – a bridge across generations and geography,” explained Abi Ruiz, fourth generation coffee farmer and owner of Don Ruiz Coffee. To fully appreciate the coffee culture, Ruiz suggests visiting local cafes and haciendas. Engage in conversation with the baristas and farmers to learn about the different varietals.
“You’ll taste more than coffee. You’ll taste Puerto Rico’s spirit,” he promised.
